Parcs et réserves du Sierra leone
There are approximately 48 forest reserves and conservation areas in Sierra Leone , most of which are inadequately protected and managed. The area constituted as Forest Reserves is estimated at 284,591.19 ha while areas additionally proposed as Forest Reserves cover 36,360.18 ha.
To date, only two protected areas constituting 112,100 hectares, the Outamba-Kilimi National Park and Tiwai Island Wildlife Sanctuary have been elevated to the status of National Park and Wildlife Sanctuary. The National Biodiversity Strategic Action Plan has identified eight key sites for biodiversity conservation in Sierra Leone and suggested that urgent action should be taken to protect them. Those 8 sites should cover 306,486 ha and form the core of Sierra Leone 's PA network in the future and would protect approximately 80-90% of Sierra Leone 's terrestrial biodiversity. These sites include
Savanna ecosystems: (1) Outamba-Kilimi National Park,
Mountain ecosystems :(2) Loma-Tingi Complex,
Rainforests : (3) Western Area Forest Reserve, (4) Gola Forest Reserves, (5) Kangari Hills
Wetlands: (6) Yawri Bay , (7) Lakes Mape & Mabesi and (8) Mamunta-Mayoso.
The responsibility for biodiversity conservation and management is the mandate of the Forestry Division of the Ministry of Agriculture, Forestry and Food Security. There is a small Wildlife Conservation Branch (WCB) under the direct control of the Forestry Division. From 2005 to 2008, the government had created a special unit called NaCEF (National Commission on environment and forestry) under the direct supervision of the Office of the president but it was decided to bring it back under the Ministry of Agriculture in 2008. The management of marine resources is under the Ministry of Marine resources and Fisheries.
The GEF project in preparation could support five PAs (Outamba Killimi, Loma, Tingi, Western Areas, Gola Forest reserves, Kangari Hills).
